A Good Man

A Wealthy Man.
A Famous Man.
A Powerful Man.
A Good-Looking Man.
An Athletic Man.
A Fast Man.
A Smart Man.
A Cultured Man.
A Funny Man.

None of these things sound good at a funeral service when used to described the one who has passed. And I do not say that because any of these things are necessarily bad descriptions--some of them are good and admirable to a degree. But here's why I made the previous statement: none of them will last. They all make for good stories here on this fallen, sinful, sad, wretched, painful, lonely planet, but is that where you want your story to end? Read Ecclesiastes sometime.

A Good Man.

That says something. You may think that it is overused, trite, cliche, unoriginal....but if you've ever known a good man, a really good man, you probably won't think so.

I knew a good man. Some of those words in the first list described him. Some of those words didn't. But if there were a word that described this man.....it is good. And talk about a memorable funeral. When is the last time you saw over 1000 people come to visit the funeral home when an "ordinary Joe" down the street passed away? Have you ever had to wait hours and hours to visit the family of an "ordinary Joe" because the line was wrapped around the funeral home?

I knew a man like this. But he was no "ordinary Joe."

He was my Dad.
I hope that one day I can be half as good as he was.

For we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world (1 Tim. 6:7).

A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches (Proverbs 22:1).

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God (Matthew 5:8).

His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant' (Matthew 25:23).

For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words (1 Thess. 4:16-18).

The last enemy to be destroyed is death (1 Cor. 15:56).

Come, Lord Jesus! (Rev. 22:20).
